TORONTO, ON - Local Recycling Giants Rule the Landfill Diversion Quest Partnership Exceeds Industry and City Waste Reduction Targets
For those people who don't think that size matters, these two recycling giants may have proven them wrong:
Environmental partners, the Delta Chelsea Hotel in downtown Toronto and Turtle Island Recycling Corp., have now exceeded both hospitality industry standards and municipal targets for landfill diversion.
In 2010, the City of Toronto set a waste diversion target of 70%.
It may have seemed a big goal at the time but the Delta Chelsea, in fact, has made it look small by diverting 80% of its waste stream to recycling by the end of 2010 and - most importantly - they've continued to maintain this diversion rate well into 2011.
The Delta Chelsea Hotel - Canada's largest hotel - has been at the forefront of hotel waste management for the last decade through a strong partnership with Ontario's largest multi-material recycling operator, Turtle Island Recycling Corp.

Under the program, all hotels in the chain have committed to decreasing their energy consumption, carbon emissions and water consumption, as well as increasing waste diversion rates.
Delta Chelsea Hotel General Manager, Ron Pellerine, said the chain will always consider the environment in its decision-making process. Pellerine was especially pleased about the timing of the news: October 17-23 was Waste Reduction Week in Ontario.
Ted Manziaris, President and Co-Founder of Turtle Island Recycling was also pleased with the news:
"Since the beginning of our partnership, the 80% diversion rate proves the Delta's dedication and relentless efforts to go above and beyond a good recycling program. Delta Chelsea has become an environmental leader in the hotel industry and it makes us proud to have such a positive working relationship with them," said Manziaris.
Established in 1990, Turtle Island Recycling is Canadian-owned, with more than 400 employees, serving 3,000 industrial and commercial customers, and more than 800,000 residential customers in Southern Ontario.
