Our Goal is Your Goal - Zero-Waste Events

Turtle Island Recycling can serve any area in the Entertainment Venue and Special Events categories.

Currently, we collect and recycle waste for Ontario Place, The Air Canada Centre, the Rogers Centre, and The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) grounds.

As Canada's leading recycling company, we recycle everything humanly possible and we take the guesswork completely out of the mix by doing the sorting and processing ourselves.

In June 2010 we helped the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) run a Zero-Waste event as it hosted the G20 summit. More than 90% of the waste generated over two days was recycled. Turtle Island did timely bin delivery and pick-up services, conducted audits to determine diversion rates, and provided information to attendees and spectators about recyclable and reusable materials used for the summit.

We worked tirelessly and efficiently to navigate downtown traffic while responding to our customers' needs.

In April 2006, the MTCC mounted another Zero-Waste event with our help. The event was a Canadian first for the facilities industries and one that established its tradition of environmental leadership.

Nearly 23,000 people attended the three-day event. Show exhibitors had a wide variety of materials on display, including stone, bricks, asphalt, wood, and concrete - well beyond the usual paper, pamphlets, cardboard and packing boxes associated with regular conventions and trade shows.

With our help, the event recycled 26 metric tons, almost half (12 metric tons) of which was paper fibres. Approximately, 238 trees and 4,300 gallons of water were saved, plus 30 cubic yards of landfill space.

Special handouts were also prepared for exhibitors, asking them to minimize their waste. All exhibitors and attendees were also happy with the results.

Zero-Waste at the Ground Level

Turtle Island installed customized three-bin separated waste containers for bottles and cans, paper, and organic waste at all concessions and food service locations. Our staff also supervised the docks after the show so departing exhibitors were clear on which bin to use and what materials to take back home with them.

Even the centre's seven garbage compactors were removed from the building during the event, which showed a serious intent to succeed as a Zero Waste event.
