"There’s no reason we can’t recycle everything.”

After setting the goal of 100% diversion in the future the Air Canada Centre, the facility has made great efforts and great investment to improve its recycling program. As Operation Director, Brian Leslie states “We’re learning as we go… but there’s no reason we can’t recycle everything.”

For the fans the ACC has provided new easy to use tri-sorters to capture the plastics, paper and organics. Behind the scenes after the games the cleaners are well trained, the staff each has a specific responsibility to capture the plastic, the paper or the organic materials generated by 20,000 fans who watch each game. Recycling and composting has become part of the culture at the ACC and this can best be seen in the kitchen, where the program is so effective only about 5% of what comes in to kitchen will end up in the landfill. The strong mandate for environmental responsibility even reaches back to the facility’s suppliers as more and more compostable and recyclable products are being introduced to replace those which can’t be recycled easily.
